The Cognitive Skill Model
Dr. Susan Hardwicke developed and patented a cognitive skill model that identifies distinct cognitive skills involved in learning, working, and living. The skills are ordered according to their evolution and interdependencies. From looking at the model the viewer can see the hierarchical relationship and understand that performance of higher-level skills depends on mastery of lower level skills. A click on any tier of the model shows the breakdown of all the skills at that level. Each skill is, in fact, a collection of related skills, grouped according to a primary function.
The model implies a systematic approach for improvement: start at the lowest level where a problem occurs and systematically re-assess and address weaknesses higher up as the lower level problems are resolved. In many cases, improving skills at a lower level causes spontaneous improvement at higher levels. For example, addressing a "blockage" in a memory system will result in significant improvements in other skills that involve that particular memory skill.
