Message for this month: self-regulation

One of the "secrets" to success and overall well-being is self-regulation. This important skill, which involves the ability to control thoughts and actions, is learned and highly influenced by a person's environment. Self-regulation is required for setting and achieving goals, for personal relationships, and for maintaining healthy habits. In early childhood, parents are the greatest external influence on self-regulation, and increasingly the school, social, and work environment have an effect. Today's electronic and media-laden culture actually work against self-regulation. They encourage immediate response and elicit instant gratification.

It's never too late to develop this skill. You can begin by practicing control of your thoughts and doing some basic meditation. If you are a parent, I encourage you to emphasize building your child's ability to self-regulate. If you don't know how to get started, don't hesitate to call us (on our NEW NUMBER: 804-205-0896).

To your health,

Important FDA Alert on Singular

It's allergy season and if you are one of millions of Americans who take antihistamines, PLEASE TAKE NOTE. This particular warning involves the drug Singulair, a leukotriene inhibitor prescribed to prevent asthma attacks and relieve allergy symptoms.

The FDA issued a warning to healthcare providers and patients of the possible risk between Merck's best selling Singulair and mood/behavior changes and suicide. Patients should discuss this information with their doctor before reducing or eliminating this medication.

Effective Strategies for Healthy Sleep

Millions of Americans suffer from sleep disorders and are not getting the help they need to remedy this problem. Conditions associated with sleep problems include increased risk for psychiatric disorders, cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke.

Keep in mind that the average adult needs 8 hours of a sleep a day, and children, depending on age, need an average of 11-12 hours of sleep a day. If you are an adult and suffer from poor sleep, please read the tips below on how to get the proper sleep you need to function at your best everyday.

Strategy #1: Start with a very low dose of melatonin. (.5 mg, achieved by breaking a 1 mg tablet in half) and increase by .5 mg every other day until optimal dosage is reached. If the .5 mg is too much, then melatonin deficiency is likely not the problem. Note: With increased sunlight during the summer months, the need for melatonin generally decreases. This is because the higher the melatonin levels (increased by sunlight) during the day, the higher the melatonin levels at night.

Strategy #2: Chamomile tea (buy an organic brand), and a Calcium Magnesium Vitamin D supplement. If you are already taking such supplement, you should take it at night. It should have at least 1200 mg calcium and 600 mg magnesium, and at a very minimum, 400 units of Vitamin D. Note: This can be used with Strategy #1. If you wake up before 3a.m., even if you have taken the melatonin, have a cup of Chamomile tea, with 2 bags if you are particularly wakeful.

Strategy #3, which can be added to #1 or #2. Get specialized CD's for sleep. We have included a link for one we often recommend here at kSero. http://www.monroeinstitute.com/store/product/php?productid=1662&cat=65&page=1

Children with Healthy Diets Get Better Grades

Findings from a recent study published in the Journal of School Health provides evidence that children who incorporate a healthy diet in their lifestyle perform better in school. You can read more on the relationship between diet and academic performance here:

Toxin found in "organic" products

Buyer Beware--Not everything labeled "organic" is healthy for you!The use of the terms "organic" and "natural" are unregulated terms, and as such do not have clearly defined requirements for use. This means you need to research the products you bring into your home. A recent study funded by a US consumer watchdog found 1,4 Dioxane, a known carcinogen and suspected neurotoxin, in several brands of "organic" personal care products. New Study links antidepressants to Type 2 Diabetes

Recent evidence suggests that those with a history of depression and taking two or more prescriptions at the same time (typically tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) doubled their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
